A frog has been pulled from a US Embassy balcony as part of a diplomatic spat.
It is the latest in a string of diplomatic incidents involving US President Donald Trump’s administration, including a diplomatic row over his proposed travel ban.US diplomats have reportedly been told to avoid any interaction with the amphibian and will be warned not to let it approach.
Trump has accused China of sending agents to try to undermine US democracy.
But the frogs have drawn some attention in Washington, with many US allies urging the US to pull the frog from the embassy balcony.
“I think the frog is a good symbol of democracy,” said Chris Gabbard, a Democrat and former secretary of state who served in the Obama administration.
“The fact that it’s been pulled and that the US is not really being transparent about this, it shows the seriousness with which the US administration is taking the issue of democracy.”
The frog, which is named Peace Frog, is one of several symbols of peace that the Trump administration has tried to get rid of as part a campaign to restore America’s standing in the world.
The frog has appeared in the Oval Office before, but was removed for a time last year.
The US embassy was built in the early 1900s to accommodate US diplomats.
It was taken down in April 2017 to replace a building that housed the US Department of State, which was moved to the new embassy building in 2021.
The new embassy, named the William F. Buckley International Center, is designed to house the president and other top officials of the US government and is currently home to a large gathering space.
Gabbard said the Trump team had decided to remove the frog because of the way it had been portrayed.
“It’s really a really important symbol for people to be aware of,” he said.
“So when you see it being used for a political purpose, I think that’s really sad.”
Trump’s spokesman, Jason Miller, told CNN on Monday that the frog was a “political cartoon” and that it was not a political message.
He said the frog, an “uniformed frog,” had been placed in the embassy because of a “tension between the two countries” over the use of the amphibians symbol.
“This is a cartoon frog, and there is no political message in it,” Miller said.
The Trump administration, which has been criticized for its treatment of human rights issues, has also moved to take down two of the frog’s species from the US State Department’s website.
