It was awarded to an American in the mid-1930s who discovered a rare and highly sought-after fossil of a human fetus inside an ancient tree.
The award was given to the winner at the Paris Peace Conference in 1945.
The prize was then awarded to another American who discovered another human fetus at a nearby site in the same region, in 1966.
The French president, Emmanuel Macron, has not publicly awarded the prize, but has often praised the work of the award-winning American, who he said was “one of the most courageous people I’ve ever known.”
In 2018, the French government announced the award would be doubled to $1 million, and Macron announced plans to donate the prize money to charities in the future.
The Trump administration has expressed skepticism about the award, claiming the prize was awarded “for political reasons.”
The award was initially awarded to a man named Robert LeVay, who was also awarded the peace prize.
The Trump administration later retracted the award.
A few years ago, Trump reportedly called LeVakay and told him to get rid of the peace sign.
The Parisian government has yet to release a statement on the matter.
