President Donald Trump and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu have agreed to a two-state solution to the conflict between the Palestinians and the Israelis.
Trump is also expected to sign an executive order that will allow for the creation of a Palestinian state and a unified Jerusalem, according to several people familiar with the situation.
The two sides also agreed to “reset” the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, but not on the basis of borders, the people said.
A key sticking point was a draft agreement that would have allowed for an independent Palestinian state in the West Bank and East Jerusalem.
But Netanyahu has insisted that the territories must be part of Israel and that Palestinians recognize Israel as a Jewish state.
Trump and Netanyahu met in Washington on Monday, and Netanyahu said the two leaders agreed on a plan to “make it clear to the world that the United Kingdom and Israel are in full control of all the territory we own in the Middle Eastern region.”
Trump has said he plans to visit Israel next week, but has not released a date for his visit.
