The World Cup is here, and as Japan’s men prepare for their opening match against South Korea in a World Cup qualifier at Yokohama Stadium on Friday night, we are still wondering which of the world’s two top two teams will win.
There are no obvious favourites, but if you’re one of the few who think the United States will win, this might be your last chance to make your prediction before the World Cup kicks off on June 11.
Here are some things to look out for in the match.
Will Japan have a big, exciting attack?
The USA’s top scorer in 2018 was one of their best players in the World Championship, and the US was a World XI favourite last year after a win over the United Arab Emirates in the final.
With the USA having already beaten Germany, the defending champions are likely to play with more intensity and flair, and it’s hard to see the US not finding a way to score.
They’re also expected to be able to make up ground quickly.
Will it be the best Japanese side?
If the Japanese were to go through on Friday, the Americans would be the favourites, and they’d be favourites in most other respects.
But if they don’t beat South Korea on Friday and Japan falls in the round of 16, the Japanese will be in for a very different experience than most other teams.
Japan has had a number of great strikers in recent years, with Shinji Kagawa, Shota Inui, Takuma Asano, and Shinji Okazaki all leading the way for the national team.
They also have players like Yoshinori Ono and Daisuke Sakurai who are capable of doing things at a higher level.
Will there be a huge attack?
This might be a surprise to some, but it’s unlikely the Japanese would play an attacking style of football.
It’s likely they’ll be more of a 3-4-3 or 4-3-1-1, but even in this kind of system, Japan’s players are usually far more compact and patient.
They’ll have to be.
Will South Korea be an attack-minded team?
South Korea will probably be more compact than Japan, but the USA will have to beat them to win, and Japan will have plenty of experience of playing the game.
The Americans will have the ball more, which will lead to them finding space, and South Korea won’t be able at all to get the ball to their attackers.
So if you think the Japanese won’t play an attack game, it might be the wrong one.
Who will score?
It’s been a very tough World Cup, with the US winning just two of their last 13 matches, and a couple of the sides that made it through were teams with very little attacking flair.
The United States won the World Club Cup with a goal from Christian Pulisic in the second round, and after losing to Argentina in the semifinals, they were left with a lot to prove.
Will the US get its chance?
Will they be able find a way past the South Koreans?
With a World League final looming on June 13, there’s plenty of time for the US to get some form, and if they lose the final, they’ll have a very good chance to win it all.
If they win, it will be the greatest achievement of all time.
If the Americans do make it out, the only thing that will stand in their way is the Japanese, who will undoubtedly have a huge squad of attacking players.
Will they have a tough World Club Final?
Yes, they will, and with the World Football League being held on June 14, the USA could very well go through and be crowned World Club Champions.
But in this case, the World League is a lot more of an afterthought than a legitimate title.
It is an event that can be won by a number, not a single team, and many of the top teams in the world don’t have the resources to afford the World Champions’ World Club Championship.
